AMALGAMATED LABOUR SPORTS

Splendid Function laired by Weather

It is hoped that every New Year’s Day in Palmerston North will be marked by a sports gathering under the auspices of the various Labour organisations of the city and district and if one can judge from the worth of the initial function held at the Sportsground yesterday, the effort will bo crowned with success. It was unfortunate that promises of a brilliant summer’s day which were forecasted for yesterday, did not eventuate. Instead a cold and heavy wind swept up from the west and dn. its best to spoil what was a laudable effort to provide an athletic attraction of merit. The features of the gathering were cycle racing, boxing and wrestling conducted under the guidance ol the amateur associations that govern these sports in the city and some exceedingly interesting events were staged To tiieso associations the committee of the sports is greatly indebted and at a suitable opportunity Mr. J. Hudgens voiced to them the thanks of the sports committee, lie also conveyed to the public who were present in J airly large numbers, thanks for patronage extended. The compliment was liaidly needed for all, including the Mayor and Mayoress ("Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Mans lord) enjoyed the meeting. There were dozens of willing helpers whose services were also appreciated, these including the cycling officials, Messrs. O. l’rouse (starter), McDougal and Trott (judges), J. Weston Smith (time-keeper}, B. Crawley (handicappcr), It. Weston (lap steward) and J. Learmonth (call steward). Mr. J. Evans was boxing referee and Air. Alex. Anderson referee for the wrestling. Air.
