Sports at Cheltenham

NEW YEAR’S DAY GATHERING. INTEREST WELL MAINTAINED Tlio officials of the Cheltenham and Kiwitca Sports Club must take credit for successfully sustaining interest in their annual New Year’s Day sports fixture for the public interest in yesterday’s gathering was well maintained, despite counter attractions and tho depression. Favoured with fine weather tho club’s programme once again attracted competitors in numbers to provide tho utmost competition and the inclusion of cycling events added to the variety of the generally diversified programme. The sportsground at Cheltenham offers an ideal picnic resort and with the sports events providing an over varying interest, a day’s outing at this popular fixture would be difficult to improve upon. The attendance was equal to that recorded last year and tho fact that the gate takings were up to those recorded in 1931 illustrates that tho club is popular with tho public. The entries for all events were also well up to those of tli<j previous fixture and altogether the day was thoroughly enjoyable. The organisation was in every way satisfactory, Mr. H. W. Wood, secretary, having very complete arrangements for the conduct of tho lengthy programme and the reception of visitors. Picnic parties enjoyed tho privilege of obtaining free milk and hot water, the provision of which is a big feature of this club’s meeting. During the running of the wire jump competition W. Kitchen, of Feilding, sustained a fall. Ho was removed to Feilding for medical attention when it was found he had sustained a fractured collarbone. The open-hunters’ competition for the Gomez Cup was won by Mr. S. G. Perry’s Canberra. Last year the event was won by Mr. T. It. Taylor’s Drift. Tho Hon. J. G.
