DANNEVIRKE BOROUGH COUNCIL. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The first fortnightly meeting of the Dannevirke Borough Council, for the new year was held on Friday evening. Present were: His Worship the Mayor .(Mr. M. D. Smith), Crs. L. Stein, F. W. Smith, W. Dobson, C. J. Hansard, D. T. Glover, S. McNabb, L. W. Ward, w. McKennon and A. W. Smith. Ratepayers in Denmark street petitioned the council to tar-seal the footpath on one side of that street, from London street comer to Edinburgh street corner. It was decided to refer the petition back to obtain the consent of all ratepayers on the side of the street concerned. The works committee reported having resolved that the borough tractor be not repaired, the overseer stating that the other transport would carry on the tractor work until the end of the financial year, when the matter of a new conveyance would come into the estimates.—Adopted. The Health Officer reported the borough to be free from infections diseases. Dannevirke Amusements, Ltd., wrote stating that Mr. W. E. Kemball was prepared to accept the offer for the lease of the Town hall, provided it was made to Dannevirke Amusements, Ltd., of which Mr. Kemball is managingdirector. After some discussion, it was decided on the motion of Cr. A. W. Smith, seconded by Cr. S. McNabb, to accept Mr. Kemball hs offer. The Weber School Committee was granted the use of the Domain recreation ground on the 19th inst. for a school picnic. The Dannevirke Swimming Club applied for permission to use the Coronation baths on the night of February 21 for the purpose of holding a carnival. A request was also made for the baths to be open on Saturday afternoons.—The application for the use of the baths was granted and the second letter requesting the baths to be kept open on Saturdays was received. Cr. Stein referred to-the takings on the Domain grandstand. On January 2, on the occasion of the athletic sports 63s had been taken for the stand that day. Cr. Stein estimated that there were abont 1600 persons on the grounds that day and only 63 had availed themselves of grandstand accommodation, i He thought patrons found Is too much and he thought it should be reduced. He then moved that the matter of the grandstand charges be referred to the works committee to bring down a report. Cr. F. W. Smith seconded and the motion was carried.

DANNEVIRKE UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE, Tire Town Clerk of Dannevirke (Mr. G. T. O'Hara Smith)J secretary of the local Unemployment, Committee, reports that the second grant of £SO was issued by the Unemployment Board for subsidy on wages under scheme No, 2, has been allocated for the purpose for whloE it was intended, 64 cases having been in receipt of subsidised wages, varying from one day to three weeks, the end of the period. Application had been made to the board for a further grant to carry on this work. Unemployment registrations with the Town Clerk numbered 1390. The nature of the work sanctioned by the board as bearing subsidy was practically all general labouring, with the exception of clerical assistance. It was difficult for painters and carpenters to secure employment as this was not a class of work on which a subsidy was granted. DANNEVIRKE FIRE. [RESIDENCE TOTALLY DESTROYED Shortly before 2.45 am. yesterday an outbreak of fire occurred in Cole street, Dannevirke, when the residence of Mr. Arthur Beattie was totally destroyed. The fire was seen from the town by the nightwatchman (Mr. Coleman), who gave the alarm. The brigade, however, on reaching Victoria avenue, found the fire to be outside their area. Mr. and Mrs. Beattie were away on a holiday visit to Wellington, and particulars of insurance are not yet available. The cause of the outbreak is unknown.
