TOO MOURNFUL A NOTE STRUCK ON ANZAC DAY
Says Governor-General
LONDON CENOTAPH CEREMONY QUOTED MORE IN KEEPING. Per Press Association. • AUCKLAND, Last Night. While speaking at the returned solders’ re-union to-night, the Govern-or-General (Sir Chas. Fergusson) said he was not quite sure whether, if we were going to keep Anzax Day properly we should not somewhat alter the character of the celebration. “I think we are a little inclined to strike a too mournful note, not too solemn a note,” he said. “I think we should try to begin to put the sadness of it all out of our minds and to dwell a little more on the glory of the day and the gi-atitude we feel to the .memory of those who fell. The note should be more cheerful than mournful. If wc do that, it will harmonise a little more with the general feeling. As time goes on, instead of having long speeches, the form of the ceremony should be rather like that which takes place in London on. Armistice Day.”
