FOXTON

PLUNKET SOCIETY. From Our Own Correspondent. Mrs. F. Robinson (prosident), presided over the monthly and annua! meetings of the Plunkct Society on Monday. There was a good attendance. Mrs. J. M. Barr’s resignation was accepted with regret and a welcome was given to Mrs. Martin, a newly elected member. The nurse made four visits to Foxton last month, visited 12 homes.- met 59 adults and 49 babies, and 22 children. Mrs. Robinson was elected flower steward and visitor for the month. The annual meeting was then, proceeded with. The committee ; s annual report was read as follows: —During the past year the work has steadily continued, the following -figures giving an indication of the year’s work. Previous year’s figures are given in parenthesis: — Visits by nurse to office 53 (53); to homes S 3 (130); adults to office 964 (1,076); babies and older children to office 1,257 (1,457). Totals: 2,382 (2,533), showing a decrease of 246. Of the new cases, 19 were naturally fed and 11 artifically. The committee wishes to place on record the, services rendered to the Society by' Nurse Fairweather, who resigned at the end of last year. Her place has been taken by Nurse Lockwood, who is deservedly popular amongst the mothers/ The increase in the sales of emulsion indicates that the mothers realise the benefit of keeping in regular touch with the nurse and in carrying out her instructions. The receipts of emulsion this season amounted to £32/3/10, as compared with £l9/4/4 last year. The Advisory board, consisting of Messrs. Perrcau, Trueman and Christie, still continues to show practical interest in the Society and had been very helpful in connection with tho proposed new Plunket rooms. At present a baby queen carnival is being held in Foxton in order to raise funds for building new rooms which we hope will shortly be an accomplished- fact. The subscriptions for honorary members show a slight falling off for the year, which is to be regretted. The usual system of raising funds for year’s working expenses in the past has been by means of the group system, but the committee considered that as it was intended to hold a baby queen carnival at the end of the financial year, it would be calling on tho public too often, were the group system carried out as well. It is therefore, owing to this that our revenue is somewhat less than it was last .year. During the year the society lost tho services of Mesdamcs C. Pearson and Yeo. Mrs. Pearson was one of the foundation members "" and for some time was a vice-president and the society desires to place, on/Tecord its appreciation of the splendid services rendered by her. Mr. Corn’s weighing machine, the proceeds of which are donated to the society, . has again proved a regular source of income, realising the amount of £3/5/114d. Contributions to office box show a slight increase for tho year, the sum of £6/8/10 being received for 1929 as against £6/5/54d. for 1928. Thanks arc due to Messrs. Madge Bros., for free conveyance for the nurse; Mrs. Kirkland for lunches for nurse; Mrs. J. Walls and -F. G. Fairey for morning and afternoon tea; Mr. 11. Osborne, free carting; Mr. Corn, for giving proceeds of weighing machine and to Mr. Trueman, for auditing.

The annual report was read and adopted as follows:—-During tho year the usual work of the society has been carried on. Three meetings wore held duriug the winter and IS parcels containing clothing and boots were given out. Duriug the months of June, July and August hot soup was supplied to over 50 school children. Tho society wishes to thank all those who donated clothing and boots and those who contribted soup, and also All Saints’ Vestry for the use of the schoolroom, Mr. G. F. Smith for receiving and distributing parcels. The chairman, in speaking of the report, said that the society had been in existence ten years doing necessary work and that those who took the soup to the school knew how much it was appreciated duiing the cold weather. The chairman’s remarks were endorsed by Rev. Vi. H. Nicholas, who added that ho personally appreciated their activities, as it helped greatly the work of a minister. Tho election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs. F. Robinson; vice-president, Mrs. Christie; hon. sec-retaries,-Mesdames Walton and Moore; committee. Revs. AY niton, Nicholas, Edmondson, Father Brenan, Captain Matheson, Mesdames Walton, Nicholas, Edmondson, A. Ross, Perrcau, Stone, McDowell, Misses Ross and Williams. Investigation committee, Revs. Nicholas, Edmondson, Walton and Captain Matheson. Tho society desires to thank the following ladies who provided soup for the* school: —Mesdames F. Ilornblow (chairman). The secretary reported for the year that the work had been as strenuous as in any previous year and that a spirit of cooperation'had animated the committee and the staff. Twelve ordinary, one special, and two sub-committee meetings had been held. The school environment had received special attention and manv improvements had been effected. The trees along Duncan street, had been removed and replaced by a fence. The old schoolmaster’s residence had been 3old and removed and the department had handed over tho proceeds of the sale to the committee and this money has (been used for ground improvement purposes. The high’seliool building was completed and officially opened during the year. The report also referred to the side school and the necessity for providing locomotion for children attending from a distance. Addition was made of certain f'cncrous donations to the sports and games fund, and to loyal co-operation of headmaster, staff and public. The audited balance sheet showed that the vear commenced with a credit of £74/6/10, and this with sundry other receipts amounted to £586/12/1; after deducting expenditure a balance remained at the end of the year of £G9/9/11. A vote of thanks was accorded tho teaching staff and another to the outgoing committee. The newly elected committee met subsequently and elected Air. J. K. Hornblow as chairman. A welcome was extended to Messrs. G. F. Smith and A. E Scott, tho new members, who both replied briefly. The position of hon. secretary was held over. Alontlily meetings will be held on the first Alondav in each month. Alcssrs. G. F. Smith and A. E. Scott were appointed visitors for the current month. SCHOOL SPORTS.
