CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
GENERAL BUSINESS AT FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Mr. M. H. Oram presided at tho fortnightly meeting of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce held yesterday. There was a large attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. J. A. Nash, M.P., L. H. Collinson, E. A. Fuller and J. J. O’Shea. On the motion of Mr. M. A. Eliott, it was decided to write Mr. O’Shea sympathising with him in his illness and wishing him a speedy recovery. , 1 Correspondence. The Customs Department wrote advising of the appointment of Mr. H. Thomas as examining officer of postal parcels at Palmerston North. On the motion of Mr. M. A. Eliott, it was decided to make Mr. Thoqias an honorary mernbor of the Chambfer. The Associated Chamber of Commerce wrote, convening a circular from the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire, pointing out the serious position likely to arise in Empire trade should the South African trade treaty placing Germany on the same basis as Empire countries in regard to preferential treatment, be ratified. Tho letter stated that the Federation was asking the South African Government to reconsider the scheme as it was likely to undermine the growth of trade within the Empire. The Chamber decided to write the Associated Chamber stating that i,t heartily supported the action of the British Federation. The Associated Chamber forwarded a letter from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, explaining its trans-Canada tour next summer and extending an invitation to members to attend.
