ECLECTIC HUMANISM IN TRAINING YOUTH
MR. MILNER’S ADDRESS. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. VANCOUVER, April 13. That there is a definite revolution in the methods of pedagogic instruction throughout the Empire has been one outstanding feature, perhaps the keynote, of the conference of the National Council of Education, which has been in session during the past week. Speakers have dealt with the necessity of a greater degree of eclectic humanism in training the young. This again was emphasised on Saturday in an address delivered by Mr. Frank Milner, Rector of tho Waitaki Boys’ High School, Oamaru, New Zealand. Mr. Milner declared that a secondary school that did not endeavour to create interests apart from the set subjects in the curriculum could not be successful. Mr. Milner instanced the necessity, fbr a more sympathetic attitude toward tho adolescent scholar, and of stimulating his mind with helpful inspiring forces and associations. Mr. Milner strongly advocated school libraries and stressed the importance of humanism rather than the retention of tho examination fetish as a means of establishing the competency of a pupil.
