PREPARING FOR THE RUGBY SEASON

Management Committee Meets The first meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Rugby District Council, for the 1923 season was held last evening, Mr. J. A. Colquhoun in the chair. Also present were: Messrs. H. R. Crawford, J. R. Hardie, K. W. Eglinton, P. O. Skoglund, E. Clevely, R. Hatch, H. Hand 3, A. J. Trevena, T. Pagan, N. Mackie, T. MeHerron. An apology was receives ?rom Mr. It. Blv. A letter was received from the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association advising that the Council could now proceed with the preparation of tho grounds which would be clear by April 13. Permission was granted the Kia Ton Club to use the oval at the Showgrounds on Saturday for practice. Gymnasium Nights, Old Boys’ Club was granted the use of the gymnasium for training purposes on Tuesday evenings, Kia Toa being allocated Wednesday, Athletic Thursday, and West End Old Boys, Monday. Tho question of providing improved training facilities for junior teams at the Showgrounds was left over for further consideration, it being stated that the A. and P. Association was" .considering a proposal to establish a dirt track with lighting facilities. The Manawatu Hockey Association was granted the use of the oval on Wednesday afternoons, provided that the Council does not require the area for Rugby fixtures. The Technical School advised that their colours had been changed and that they desired to register their colours for the season as maroon jerseys and blue shorts. It was decided to grant tho required registration of colours. Feilding Old Boys’ seniors were granted permission to play Waituna West senior team on No. 2 ground, Johnston park, on Saturday and Feilding seniors were granted similar permission to play Apiti on No. 1 ground. Feilding Old Boys’ juniors and Waituna West juniors w-ill also meet, 'permission being granted for this game to take place. First Aid Officers. The Railway Ambulance Club advised that members were prepared to act as first-aid officers for the season and it was decided to invite the presidenr. and secretary of the club to meet tho management committee at its next meeting to discuss various matters in connection with the first-aid service.

Applications were received from Hokowhitu and Milson schools for grants' of footballs. The applications were referred to the Primary Schools’ Association. Sub-Committees Appointed. Messrs. A. M. Ongloy, J. Ryan and H. Hands were ajipointed tho senior selection committee for the season. Messrs. E. Clevely and J. A. Colquhoun were appointed junior selectors and Mr. R. E. Hatch for the third grade. Mr. R. E. Miers was appointed union representative at Feilding, and Mr. F. D. Mackie in a similar capacity at Woodville. The following committees were also appointed:— Gymnasium committee, Messrs. Colquhoun, Hands and the secretary; classification committee, vthe full Council; fixtures committee, Messrs. Eglinton and Skoglund. Permission was granted Woodville thirds to play a Paliiatua team on Wednesday. Athletic will be playing Old Boys in a practice game on Saturday, and an endeavour is being made to arrange a game between Kia Toa and Woodville. It was decided to approach the Primary Schools’ Association in an endeavour to have a midget competition commenced on June 1. The Council’s delegate to the forthcoming conference of the New Zealand Rugby Union was empowered to apply to the Union ‘ for a loan of £SOO for the purpose of laying out playing grounds in Palmerston North and district. The secretary was instructed to apply for the ufee of grounds at the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, Woodville High School, Palmerston North Technical School and Feilding Agricultural College. In connection with the P»rlc road grounds, Mr. Hands reported that this area would in all probability be available for use this season. There was, however, at present no dressing accommodation and cattle would be required to be turned on in order to eat down the growth of grass.
