A vote of condolence with Mr. C. Hall, of Palmerston North, in the death of his son through accident recently, was passed at yesterdays meeting "of the Manawatu A. and I’. Association. Mr. Winiata Pataka, a well-known resident of Levin, died on Monday at. his residence, Hokio, at the ago of 76. He was the father of the noted footballers, Martin, Nepia, Tom, Neville and Toha Winiata. At last evening’s meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Rugby District Council, members stood for a moment in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mr. Martin Winiata, of Levin, in the death of his father. Reference to the impending departure of Mr. D. Buchanan (Tiakitahuna) on a lengthy trip abroad, was made at' yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu A. and P. committee. The President in wishing him bon voyage, asked his acceptance of a fountain pen from members as a token of esteem. Cheers were given for Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan. • Last evening the hoarders and proprietress of 1 ’ Wliarcma, ' ’ Main street, Palmerston North, gave a send-off to r.no of their number, Mr. Sid. Cowie, of the railway staff, who has been transferred to Wanganui. Dancing and musical items filled in a very pleasant evening, and Mr. Plowcr on behalf of those present handed Mr. Cowie a set of brushes and a fountain pen accompanied by Lest wishes for his success in his new job. At yesterday's meeting of the Kairanga’County council, a warm tributo was paid to "the retiring chairman (Or. Jos. Batchelor! who has presided over the council’s deliberations for the past three years. All councillors at the table paid individual tribute to the chairman’s unfailing tact and courtesy, while on the motion of Cr. D. Collie, seconded by Cr. P. J. Small, a motion of appreciation of Cr. Batchelor s services to tho council was placed on the minutes, after being carried by acclamation. Cr. Batchelor in thanking Ins fellow councillors for their vote of appreciation, stated that it had been pleasure to work with such an excellent body.
