BRIEF MEETING OF HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD
PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS. Mr. W. R. Birnie presided at the monthly meeting of the High Schools Board of Governors last evening. There were also present: Mrs. Aitcheson, Messrs. T. R. Hodder, W. Rutherfurd, AV. L. Fitzherbert and O. Monrad. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. J*. A. Nash, M.P., and W. F. Durward. Reports. The rector of the Boys’ High School (Mr. J. Murray) reported as follows: — Roll, 381; average attendance, 365. Mr. A. Salmond, relieving assistant, left on March 28 to take up a position at Otago Boys’ High School. Mr. J. K. Brown, who was appointed to a D grade position, commenced duty on April 3. Messrs. W. L. Fitzherbert, W. C» Collier, and A. D. Campbell, of the Manawatu centre of the Royal LifeSaving Society, visited the school on March 22 and presented the school team with the secondary schools’ shield wot at the recent competition. The first cricket eleven visited Wanganui on March 19 to play the annual match with the Technical College. Unfortunately, the game had to be abandoned, owing to wet weather. Mr. C. F. Christian presented an interesting trophy in the shape of P. E. Warner’s “Fight for the Ashes in 1926’’ autographed by the members of the English eleven, to the holder of the bowling average in the first eleven for the season. * The cadet company was in camp for special training from April 6 to 13. Mrs. H. Rhodes, principal of the Girls High School, reported: Roll, 251; average attendance, 239.4. Miss K. Simkin has been appointed co a position at the Wellington Girls’ College and the vacancy thus caused lias been filled by the appointment of Miss J. B. McLeod, B.H.Sc., chief science mistress at the Wanganui Girls' College, who will take up her duties during the second term. Miss Coyne, M.A., commenced work on April 3. At the end of March, Miss M. F. Bale resigned her position as a B grade assistant. Her successor has not yet been appointed. As it was impossible to obtain a relieving assistant, we aro carrying on under difficulties, being a teacher short. The number of boarders at present is 18. The new sleeping porches.arc now in use and are very much appreciated by* the girls. The director of the Technical School, Mr. G. G. Hancox, reported: —During the month attendance at all classes has been well maintained. The cadets were in camp at the Showgrounds from April 6 to 13. The board is asked to confirm the temporary appointment of Mr. !A. R. Richards to take Air. Prccce’s j evening, and Miss Mawhinney’s day ! typing classes. * All reports were adopted. The board discussed in committee the appointment of a singing master for the Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools, finally deciding to hold the matter over till the next meeting.
