Special Meeting From. Our Own Correspondent. A special meeting .of tlie Kiwitoa County eouncil was held at Kimbolton on Monday evening. There were present Crs. L. T. McLean (chairman), F. O. Stack, W. Hair, D. L. Younger, N. V. Shannon, T. D. Wood, J. A. T. Brown, and J. H. Williamson. After perusing the estimates of receipts a,nd expenditure it was resolved: That it is the intention of this council at a special meeting to bo held on May 18, 1929, to make and levy general rates under the provisions and authorities of The Rating Act, 1925, and Section 120 of The Counties Act, 1920, and respective amendments, on the rateable valuation (on the basis of the capital value) of all rateable property of the following nine ridings of which this county consists as follow:—Cheltenham riding, 3-4ths of Id in the £.; Kiwitea riding, 5-Bths of Id in the £.; Waituna, 3-4ths of Id in the £., Ongo, 5-Sths of Id in the £.; Kimbolton, 3-4ths of Id in the £; Peep o’ Bay, 7-Bths of Id in the £.; Pukihikura, Id in the £.; Rangiwahia, Id in the £.; Hautapu, Id in the £d. Rates arc payable in one sum at the County office, Kimbolton on July 2, 1929. ORDINARY MEETING. At the ordinary meeting held yesterday there were present: Crs. L. T. McLean (chairman), F. 0. Stack, J. A. T. Brown, J. H. Williamson, D. L. Younger, W. Hair, N. V. Shannon and T. D. Wood. Cr. Shaw was granted leave of absence. Resolutions were passed as follow: Moved by Crs. L. T. McLean and Stack that tenders <be invited for the supply and delivery of 1250 dog collars, tenders to .close at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 1929. Moved by Crs. Brown and Williamson that M. Jensen’s offer to deliver 500 cubic yards of screened metal at Potaka bridge at 3s 3d per yard; also 500 cubic yards,, at Vennell’s Flat at Is 9d per yard, be accepted. The Public Works department, advised payment of subsidy on main highways amounting to' £905 10s sd. The Public Trustee, advised that the balance of the Vinegar Hill bridge loan,, amounting to £'ooo, had been remitted to the credit of the council’s account. The chairman, Main Highways board, forwarded agreement, duly completed for purchase of tractor and grader. The District Engineer concerning road estimates, 1929/1930, advised that applications for grants must be for-

warded not later than June next. Grants to bo prepared and sent in. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. de la Perelle) forwarded a copy of a statement prepared by the Director of Town Planning, re the subdivision of land in counties. Mr. W. H. Edney, requested permission to erect a small building on the roadside fronting his property on the Middle road.—Granted subject to approval of overseer. Statement Of Rates As On March 31, 1929. General 1928/29: Struck £11,269 13s Bd, paid and rebate £11,175 7s 4d, outstanding to date £94 6s. 4d. Arrears, 1927/28: Outstanding at 1/4/1928 £l4O 12s 2d, paid £B3 6s Id, outstanding to date £57 6s Id. Arrears of previous years: Outstanding at 1/4/1928, £34 8s 3d, paid and written off £l7 5s 7d, outstanding to date £l7 2s Sd. Special rates, 1928/1929: Struck, £2773 12s lOd, paid and thirds, £2763 6s 2d, outstanding to date £lO 6s Bd. The following report of the overseer of the southern ridings for the period ended April 6, was presented: — Cheltenham riding: The drains and culvert outlets on the Cheltenham Gross road have been cleaned out and the usual maintenance attended to. The Beaconsfield Valley road and a section of Hayne.’s road and the Kimbolton road have been trimmed with the power grader. The contractors are making good progress with the work of reconstructing the Lower Beaconsfield bridge. Kiwitea: Mcßeth’s road has been trimmed and stones knapped on the newly metalled portion. The section of main highway in the riding has also received attention with the power grader. During the past month, County dump trucks have delivered 1521 cubic yards of maintenance metal on thq Kimbolton road. The pit men aro stripping and preparing for carting metal to Kiwitea from Mr. Beard’s pit, and a start will bo made carting out the metal during the coming week. The northern section of the Beaconsfield road has been trimmed and is now in a very improved condition. Waituna: The usual maintenance on all roads has received attention and the Kiwitea-Tapuae and a section of Mangapipi road have been improved with the grader. Fern and scrub have been cut back. Ouga: The County dump truck delivered 487 cubic yards of maintenance metal on the main highway. It is

hoped to complete all metalling in this riding in about ten days’ time. Kimbolton: The roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work cutting back fern and scrub, cleaning out water, tables and culverts. The dangerous metal drift on the Cliff road No. 53 main highway has been excavated back to prevent further trouble and danger. Peep o’ Day: In the western section of this riding, the usual maintenance work has been carried out. A breakaway on the Mangapapa road has been repaired with timber breastwork and earth filling. On the Kiwitea-Tapuae road, the old grader has effected improvements, and a section of the Peepo -Day road to Kiwitea stream has also received attention. On the- eastern section usual maintenance work has received attention. At present the permanent roadman is assisting in the preparation of metal for the Kiwitea riding. The overseer for the northern ridings reported as under: — Pakihikura: On the Sandon block, pot holes have been attended to, and a bad bend improved on the Mangamako road. The clay portion of the Peka road has been trimmed and on the Ohingaiti-Pemberton roa<| the roughest places and water tables attended to. Regarding the Tutaewhio extension leading to Mr. Marshall’s provided the weather conditions are favourable, this work should be finished early next week. Rangiwahia: The Pukerimu and McKean’s hill have been top-dressed with screened river metal from the Oroua, Mangoira and Karewarewa. A start has been made on the Ruae track, replacing two old wooden bridges and culverting wot places. Seven sets of cement pipes required and all the material have been delivered on the ground for the bridges. Part of the timber for the Mangoira bridge is on tho site and a start will be made as soon as possible. Hautapu: Approximately one mile of the Upper Mania and Titarangi roads has been widened to 9 feet in papa cuttings and 10 feet elsewhere. On the Mangaharhriki road between Euahine and the Mangaweka bridge, bad points are still being cut back and the roughest places attended to. The contractor has made a start carting metal from Mangaweka bridge, where it is screened. The water-tables, potholes and. roughest places on the Kawhatau roads are being attended to. On the State Farm road, the clay portion has been cleaned up.—Adopted.
