RESTORATION OF PENNY POSTAGE

LETTER TO MR. BALDWIN. British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Jan. 10.. An appeal to tho Government to restore penny postage is made by the Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of British Industries, and other representative organisations. In a letter to the Prime Minister, the signatories point out that in the i/*<t few years the Government has sought to justify the postponement of this reform on the ground that the Post Office surpluses were required to meet Exchequer needs. Tho estimated sun plus of the postage services for th* current year is over £5,000,000. The signatories submit that the lirst call upon Post Office revenue should be foi the provision of cheap and efficient service, and point out that Canada has recently decided to introduce imperial penny postage, which New’ Zealand has enjoyed for some time.
