Tho death is telegraphed from Auckland of Captain H. Goodwyn Archer, aged 79. Dr. Frank Ward, medical superintendent of the Palmerston North Hospital, is at present on annual leave. The death is reported from ’Dunedin of Police Inspector Kemp, one of the best-known police officers in the Dominion.- . . ;.1 A Bomo cable states that the Pope suffered a slight injury to his foot in alighting from a motor car in the Vatican grounds. Tho Mayor (Mr A. J. Graham) leaves for Wellington this morning to interview the Minister in connection with the taking over of the Manawatu Gorge road by the Government. . • Mr E. Franklin, ex-conductor of the Kaikorai Band, being about to leave for Palmerston North, was presented by his 1 .colleagues of the Town Hall staff, Dunedin, with a travelling, bag, a fountain pen, and a poeketbook. The death occurred early on Wednesday morning at his residence Ohariu Valley, Johnsonville, of Mr W. L. Beech, clerk to the Makara County Council l since February 1915.
