RUGBY FOOTBALL

East Coast Superior in First AJI

Black Trial

The first of the All Black Rugby trials was played at McLean Park, Napier, this, afternoon, when the Combined Walrarapa —Bush team met the East Coast combination (Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast), the latter winning by 23, points to 8. The .reather was glorious but the attendance very poor. ;' There were present Messrs A. Guy and B. and N. McKenzie, the. North Island selectors. There was only one alteration in the teams. Murland (Poverty Bay) replacing Grensldo, (Hawke’s Bay). Bight from‘thp kick-off the Coast team took ’ the o%nslvo and pinned the’* opposition I '’ln” Its 25 where two penalties gave Walrarapa relief. A running drop by Yates: just missed the- mark. - Immediately after .Coast were seen in three movements which broke down through bad handling. Bramwell. Gorkin and Murland figured prominently. Despite all efforts to the cont- -y Walrarapa fail-ed-to keep Coast out, Bramwell letting the ball out for Corkill to make a splendid opening, M. Brownlie capping the ' effort under the posts. Caulton missed an easy kick. Coast 3 —Wairarapa-Bush 0. • Two minutes later C. Brownlie followed a high kick through from the ruck and paved the way for Bennett and Caulton, the latter grassing well put. Yates fallen to improve. Coast 6—Wairarapa-Bush 0. Play for the most part lacked sting and life. Tire Coast forwards, with Swain, M. and C. Brownlie • and Beeves in the van quite overshadowed the opposition pack. Bramwell again distinguished himself . when he beat Walrarapa t«idly in a tricky run and allowed Swiin to , ground. Caulton' failed again. Coast 9 —WairarapaBush 0. Wairarapa-Bush opened their account, through an indiscreet kick behind t(ie line, Hart securing from a scramble to touch down. Cundy's effort failed. Coast 9—WairarapaBush 3. ■ r Coast wasted no time in retaliating first M. Brownlie and then Caulton crossing. Both" kicks went astray. Coast 15— Wairarapa-Bush 3. Just before half time the Wairara-pa-Bush backs swung -into action, Cundy, Udy, Stringfellow and Tait participating, only for Langlands 1 to bring off a wonderful save . The Coast forwards were superior in all departments while their backs quite outpaced the opposing rearguard. In the second spell Murland was replaced by Huxtable (Hawke’s Bay) on the Const wing. N ■ Coart wasted no time and again assumed the. upper hand, three successive determined efforts being stopped a few feet from the line. Bennett had hard iuck in not getting across and be was ably supported by Langlahdg-and Corkill; Roacho and Fair-brother were the most staunch defenders,’ while .T. Donald and Harvey were playing much Improved games. Conrad and ML Brownlie associated, in a parsing bout 'which ended- in ...the latter notch-, ing his third , try. / Vales missed. Coast 18—Wairarapa-Bush 3. Towards the-third quarter Coast began to slacken the pace somewhat and Wairarapa-Bush exerted’ themselves so as to have more of the ball. Nevertheless they made several fruitless attempts to improve their score, the, tackling of the Coast being exceptionally deadly. The goal kicking on both sides was deplorable, up to this stage eight penalties having met with no success besides seven tries having been unconverted. Cda:t increased their lead through Brownlie’s initiative from the ruck, Caulton and Corkill finishing off with a fine sprint for the latter to cross under the posts M. .Brownlie-succeeded in converting. Coast . 23—Wairarapa-Bush 3. Three minutes later Cundy put in a wonderful run following an interception which took play near the line. In the enduing play Tait shot over for Cundy to hoist a splendid goal from an awkward position. Coast 23—Wairarapa—Bush 8. The pace slackened up in the dying stage, the heat telling its talc on physical fitness. No-side found the score unaltered. On the whole the play was not a very good interpretation of the code. The players except in the case of several of the old hands seemed keener on individual efforts than concerted play. SOUTH AUCKLAND TEAM FOR ALL BLACK TRIAL, HAMILTON, Sept. 14.
