Dannevirke Neagle Memorial to Royal Game

Open “Six” goes to Arrow Lad

Cerf Wins Harris Hack Cup

The Dannevirke Racing Club held its Spring Meeting yesterday •in glorious \yeather, but again the financial stringency was evident in the “tote” returns, £10,347 bein'g put through the machine, against £12,414 for the meeting last year, the deficiency being £2,067. The Neagle Memorial 'was won by Royal Game, while the open "six” fell tdsArrow Lad.

The public, were slow to get on to the winners, Cerf being the only favourite to win for the day.

Disaster attended the running of the Ruahine Handicap, Miss

Hupana falling and breaking her neck, the rider, T. Tito, receiving » serious injuries. In falling ,she caused Queen’s Choice to stumble and'he lost his rider, not, however, with serious injuries. The Dannevirke Hunt Club will hold its annual meeting on the course to-day. -

How They Ran Bed Fuchsia Wins Easily. ■ Braemar was the sole defector f on the Hurdles, and Arataura, after being second la the betting list for some time eventually wound up a good ~ favourite, carrying £54 more than IJed Fuchsia, whom he replaced In •' the betting order. The field got a ' good start, Arataura leading over the first - fence from Rakauponga, Red Fuchsia, and. Ramblin’ Kid. Going into the back stretch the order was Arataura, Rakauponga, Red Fuchsia, Bailyfarnon, Ramblin’ Kid. Scornful and' Revel. Half way along the; straight. Ramblin’ Kid broke down; and tailed the field for the remainder of the distance. On the. bottom turn R'ed Fuchsia ran up into second place four lengths behind Arataura, Ballyfarnan and Rakauponga being behind the leaders and twenty lengths clear of . the remainder. Red Fuchsia assumed command when the field entered the straight, and led Arataura and Bailyfarnon over the last two fences to the judge. The last named got up in time to heat the favourite by three lengths for second place. Rakaupongo came home a long way back, followed by Scornful Revel,' and Ramblin’ Kid. Grey Mist From End to End. ,-C Excess carried the bulk of tho -'money In the Maiden, having £llß more to carry than Abisogne, the next in demand. After that there was a big drop, and anything was a price to win. Grey Mist got the best of a bad staid, Charmeline and Heather Blend remaining on the mark. Behind the leader to the turn, Borselene, Bundle and Abisogne were the most prominent In that order. Entering tho turn for home. Grey Mist was still in charge from Kindle, Abisogne, Borselene, Excess and Golden Shadow. Grey Mist was never troubled in tho run to tho judge and she won comfortably by a good length from Abisogne, who beat Borselene by a neck for second place. Next to come home were Kindle, Ring Boy, Excess and Land Rent. The remainder came home in a bunch. Tommy Green Breaks His “Duck.” Beaumont was a good favourite for the President’s Handicap, carrying £216, which was about £SO more “than Decoy Bird had to carry. There was considerable delay at the barrier, caused through the fractiousness of Decoy Bird and Buoyant, the start finding the latter badly left. Coot was away first,, but when the field settled Sown the order was Lady Ideal, Coot, Royal Land and Arrow Lad, which was the order on to the turn, when Arrow Lad ran up Into second place behind Lady Ideal, the order to follow being Coot, Royal Land, Decoy Bird, Beaumont and Epistle. Enter, ing the straight Arrow Lad took charge from Lady Ideal, Coot and Royal Land, and was never headed down the home stretch winning easily by three lengths from Royal Land ‘who made a good run to beat the favourite by nearly a length for second place. Next to come home were Coot, Royal Damon and Cosmetic. The win of Arrow Lad marked the first win of the new season for the Palmerston North lightweight, T. Green, who headed the list last year. Imitation Scores a Win. Four scratching.! in the sis furlong Hack event left ten runners to faco the starter ,and of these the public showed a decided preference for Atareria, supporting him to the extent of £192 more than Reckless who was next in order of favouritism. The order away from Arch Arrow, Imitation, Eloquent, Wanderlust, Reekleas and Chips. At tho turn, the order had been changed a little, Reckless running into second place behind Arch Arrow, followed by Imitation, Wanderlust, Chips and Eloquent. When the field sighted home tho leader was still Arch Arrow, Reckless, Wanderlust, Imitation and Chips running him closely. In the run to the judge. Arch Arrow was ' headed by Imitation, and Wanderlust. Imitation got the decision by .a neck, Arch Arrow being two lengths behind

Wanderlust. Next in order past the post were the favourite. King Quex, Reckless and Eloquent, Koyal Game Piloted to Victory. The Higgle Handicap winner, Tresham, was sorted out by the public as having the best chance in the • Neagle Memorial, and accordingly he j was . backed to the extent of £414, which was £B7 more than that allotted to Royal'Game, the‘ultimate win- ; ner. Pantagruel took up the early running from Royal Game, Imperial Spark, and Tresham, Pas?lng the stand, the order was Royal Game, Comedy Prince, Tresham, Imperial ' Spark Tame Fox and Pantagruel. 1 There was little or, no change when the field went into the back stretch, but at the five, Comedy Prince had dropped back to last and Tame Fox had run into second place, the order of the remainder undergoing little change. At the turn. Comedy Prince had again run into second place behind Royal Game, the rest being in a bunch a clear length away. Royal Game sighted home first, showing the way to Tame Fox, Imperial Spark and Pantagruel, with Tresham a . little way back. In the- run to the judge Royal Game was never headed, and he won by a clear length from, Tame Fox, -who was a neck better than the favourite. Imperial Spark was fourth, followed by Pantagruel and Comedy Prince. An Outsider Scores. Punters were very much astray in the Tahoraite Hack Handicap, six being being better backed than the ultimate winner. Essential, who carried £lO3, against £348 on the favourite, Tanagra. Avazonn took up the early running from Tanagra, Lady Faye and Essential. At the five furlongs mark Tanagra went to the front and led* Broad Acre, Avazone, Essential, and Lady Faye on to the' turn, where Broad Acre took charge. Essential running into second place ahead of Tanagra in iwhich order they entered the home stretch. The run home to the judge was an excellent race, all having a clear run. Essential proved to be the best of the field, wining by a long neck from the favourite, with Moopai half a length away in third place.. The last named finished well, coming out of the field with.a great run. Butterscotch was fourth, leading Lady Fayo, Broad Acre and Watchman. An Unlucky Race. Disaster attended the running of the Ruahine Handicap, Miss Hupana | being killed, and he r rider, Tommy {Tito, being badly injured. Horomea I went out favourite being £l9 better backed than Starboard Light the 'next in the order of betting. Lipsol took up'the early running, but when (the field settled down, Willow Wai took charge and led Lipsol, Buoyant, 'Horomea, Ganymede ami Starboard I Light to the turn the order then being Willow Wat, Lipsol, Buoyant, Starboard Light and Ganymede, with Miss Hupana the best placed of the field. Willow Wai continued to lead when the home run was commenced, the order behind him undergoing very little change. Before the field straightened up, Miss Hupana fell, and was killed, and Queen’s Choice stumbled over her and lost his rider. The leaders were not affected by the mishap ,and Willow Wai continued to lead the field home, winning fairly easily by two lengths from Lipsol, who was three lengths better than Starboard Light. Next homo was Horomea, who was showing the way to Ganymede, Our Jack and Buoyant. Cerf Wins the Last by a Head, Cerf was a good favourite for the last race, and was the only one during the day to return a dividend. Gourmet and Lin Arlington were early to show out, and led on to the course proper, when Braemar took up the running from Waicullus, Gourmet, Lady Cynthia and Lin Arlington. At the turn for homo, Waicullus, Braemar and Gourmet were together in a lino in the lead, ahead of Caltthe, Lady Cynthia. Cerf and Grand National Moepal also being in a handy position. The cnnaul race meeting of the Thames Jockey Club on October 29 and -U is this year to be held at Ellerslie instead of Thames. The Auckland Racing Club committee in granting permission of the use of the Ellerslie course states that it was given to understand that Thames race couvre had been condemned as now cmituticted as unsafe for racing and that in order to make such a course a safe one it was essential to acquire additional land and generally reconstruct the racing track at the expenditure of £4,000, which the Thames Club would find it difficult to raise under present conditions. The committee carefully considered the position and feeling it was its duty in the interests of racing to help the Thames Jockey Club in its predicament and to prevent the same from becoming defunct resolved to agree to the application on the understanding that the Thames Club immediately acquires the necessary land an e.embarks at once on the work of remaking its track and putting it in proper condition so that there would be no doubt of it racing on its own course next season.
