THE JERSEY AND THE FRIESIAN
REPI/T FROM MINISTER OP AGRICULTURE. The following, letter has been received by the secretary of the New Zealand Friesian Association, from the Hon. Minister for Agriculutre, in reply to the' Association’s protest against the report that appeared In the" New Zealand Herald" on results obtained from Dairy Breeds at RaUkura Government Farm of Instruction: .V “I duly received your ultimo, regarding statements'made by the manager of the Ruakura farm concerning the Jersey breed of cattle, and would' have replied earlier but for my absence, combined wltji the fact that certain enquiries- were necessary in [connection with it., , , , “I have noted the matters set out in this letter and I may at once state that the value of the Friesian breed is fully appreciated, and the high yields obtained from the Government’s own Friesian herd amply support this opinion. “The. manager at Ruakura is quite a fair-minded man and while, not unnaturally, he was desirous of stressing the value of the Jersey herd under his care at 'the farm, it was unfortunate that his views 'should, have gained publicity in such form as‘ to convey the impression that they reflected upon the value of other breeds. , ( ■ “Everyone realises that each standard breed has its merits, and, as already stated, the performances of Friesian cows speak for themselves in establishing the high degree -of merit, in milk and butterfat production to which that breed has attained. —I beg to remain, Tours, etc;,. 6. HAWKEN. Minister of Agriculture.”
