i VeferaH Outplaces New Zealand Champion [WELLINGTON WINS WILDING SHIELD [“Times' Special.] CHRISTCHURCH. Feb. 19. Wellington won the Anthony Wilding Shield after a cloej finish to-day, by two sets. Keen interest , was shown in the play .and the Issue was In doubt right to the finish. The meeting between E. D. Andrews, this year’s champion, and the'veteran Ollivler, last year’s holder of the Dominion title, was the chief event of the day, and although shrewd judges anticipated victory for the Canterbury crack, they were hardly prepared for such a decisive win. In the first set Ollivler gathered up everything and led 5 —2. Andrews, playing doggedly, took the eighth game after being down 30 —40, but Ollivler, playing his best tennis, took the set 6—B. In the second se + , Ollivler dominated the game and outplaced the champion right through ’Although Andrews was playing good tennis, he could do nothing against the brilliant play of his more experienced opponent, and was decisively beaten In a love set. Den France appeared to have the game against Patterson in hand almost from the start. In the second ' get, France led 2—l and did as he liked, Patterson lacking speed and length. Subsequently Patterson improved slightly and brought the . ‘ scores to 3 all. France’s chop strokes against a strong wind made his returns unplayable and Prance took the set with 6 —S and the match. Prance displayed great generalship and tricked Angas by cross shots in the first, set, taking it 6—2. In the second set, Angas showed improved form, being strong on the forehand drives, which had' France guessing. He took the set 9—7. In the third Angas settled down, half volleying with remarkable precision. France was on the defensive most of the time with Angas punching on to his backhand. He took the set 6 —4. Doubles; Ollivler and Seay beat Andrews and France 6—B, 6—2, 7—5 Patterson and Angas lost to France and Wilson I—6, 6 —S. SUZANNE TO PLAY IN ENGLAND. (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Fob. ID. ,The “Daily Express” says that HV Mdlle. Suzanne Lenglen is expected in London shortly to discuss financial 'h details ,to stage a series of tennis matches in which she will play in fe England. The promoters are planning that at first Mdlle. Suzanjie will play twice daily, at Albert Hall. Afterwards there will be a series of games in every largo town in Britain, then in all European capitals. The promoters declare that professional tennis is, bound to grow and shortly there will be professional ; tennis championships in every country. If ho could arrange the final to be played in London it would be at least equal to Wimbledon as an at- ■■ traction. Wo want Mrs. Godfrey, the only woman in the world who ever worried Suzanne, to become a professional.
