OPERA HOUSE BOX PLANS
TO BE KEPT AT OPERA HOUSE, BOROUGH COUNCIL TAKES A HAND. The recommendation of the Opera, House committee that a clause should be Inserted in the new lease of the Opera House that box plans in future shall be opened and kept at the Opera House, was responsible for brief discussion at the Borough Council meeting last night. Cr. Graham mentioned that there had been dissatisfaction over the bookings In the past and the committee felt that box plans in future should be at the Opera House and the companies could make whatever arrangements were necessary with the caretaker or some responsible person.
Cr. Eliott considered the recommendation unreasonable. The Council really had no right to lay (lowa such a condition.
Cr. Fitzherbert, on the other hand, considered the Council could formulate any conditions it liked. He favoured the idea, In view of the discontent of the past
Cr. Edwards: I agree with the idea, but I don’t think we are going the right way about it. I saw somewhere where Councillors had free seats.
Crs. (excitedly) t Free seats! Cr. Edwards: I have not had S free seat so far.
Cr. Graham (in explanation): Wt> had the right to book one day ahead of the general public that is all He also explained that rentals to professional companies were being increased by £2 a night and candidates for political and municipal honours who desired the use of the Opera House would be charged 30/- a night. The recommendations were adopted.
