Where a clean cultivation has not been .observed, all growths such as j docks, grass, etc., should be kept close cut. It must be remembered such growth not only helps to smothe : he tree but acts as a breeding ground for several of the pests, inc uding bronze beetle, which is due to make its appearance at any time now. Ground under cultivation should be kept lightly worked with a harrow, so as to conserve the moisture as much as possible. Any dead leaves or Wood brought to the surface at this time of the year act as a further source of black spot infection.
