BOXING.

amateur bouts. MANAWATU ASSOCIATION'S TOURNEY. There was only a fair attendance at the Opera House last night for the amateur contests staged by the Manawatu Boxing Association. It must D said that the idea of promoting such a meeting was a good one. Even if there was a-slight loss (caused by the sudden change of weather that kept many intending patrons at home) it is better policy than finding a couple o hundred pounds for a professional fight. There is no question about its being better sport, with possibilities of developing the latent talent of tl Mnaawatu district. The following contests were staged;— Bantam Weight.

E. Downes (Palmerston North), 8.7, v. M. Daizelll (Palmerston North) 8 9 —The official decision was a draw, Dalzcill used both bands all the time, while Downes simply poked. He certainly took the final round with a few dean hits, but was well behind on the first two heats.

Feather Weight. ’ First Round.—T. Bond (9.0) v. W. Roach (9.2): This bout was_ not a brilliant exhibition. The Maori had a good left, but not knowing how to use it, the decision went to Bomb Bye . a. Flood (Palmerston North) (three rounds). —A. Flood v. T. Bound: Floo' % commenced by scoring at the, in-fighting, and was very cool. First round hardly under way before be got Bond with a straight right in the solar plexus and It was a case of “goodliye Maguiness. Bond stood up like a man and admitted defeat. Light Weight. First Round—F. Dowling (Shannon), 10.0 v. L. Brown (Palmerston North), 9.8: Dowling was aggressive throughout with a nasty right, and the decision in his favour was the only possible one. M. Strange (Palmerston North), 9.11, v. W. Cootes (Shannon), 9.13; Strange with hefty rights led all the way. R. Dunn (Palmerston North) , 9.5, v. R. Sharman (Palmerston North), 9.12: Lunn while much shorter in reach made all the running. Sharman was conspicuous with a vicious right lunge that just missed a connection as the bell rang for half time. Lunn was using his right hard in the second spell. In fact there were only six, real punches and they were all landed on Sharman. 1 Semi-final. —Strange v. Dowling: The former boxed better and that accounted for the decision in his favour. Dowling got in some nice rights in the second round, but a few warnings for holding settled his chances. Final (three rounds). — Strange v. Lunn: The first two rounds were even. In the third Lunn was trying hard all the way, but Strange was cleaner cut and a better boxer, so that the decision in his favour was not surprising. Welter Weight, (Three rounds —only entrants). R. de Cleene (Palmerston North) 10.0, y. E. Ropata (Shannon), 10.12: Although the Maori was longer in the reach de Cleene stood close in and "rode hard” all the way. Middle Weight.

Mi C. Teece (Marton) . 11.1, v. R. Havlll (Palmerston North), 11.9: Extra round was ordered, and Havlll was lucky to get a chance. Warned twice for holding in ,tha first round.
