CHAMPION ATHLETES.

TO COMPETE IN PALMERSTON NORTH.

Several New Zealand champions will be seen in action on the Sportsground next Saturday afternoon, when the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club will conduct a monster afternoon gathering, for which excellent entries have been received. Included amongst the competitors will be C. H. .Jenkins, of the Wellington Club, who is the Dominion’s premier short distance runner, and with D. A. Tracey, of the Victoria College Club, measuring strides with him in the 100 yards event, a stirring contest should be seen

It will be remembered that at a recent New Zealand championships Jenkins created a great surprise by defeating his more experienced opponent, who is the Australasian quarter-mile title holder. Other competitors will include A. C. Dufresne, of Levin, who is the New Zealand one and three miles champion, and W. Wilton, of the Manawatu Club, who is the first athlete from Palmerston North to win a Now Zealand championship for over twenty years. Wilton was only a few inches off the New Zealand record when he won the hop, step and jump event at Dunedin, while in the long jump he was only beaten by one and a half inches. The first event will start at 1.80 o’clock.
