GREAT TRUNDLING PERFORMANCE.
IN SYDNEY GRADE CRICKET. [By Electric Cable —Copyright,] LAuat. and N. 55. Cable Association.] SYDNEY ‘March 31. Bowling for Western Suburbs against Balmain, Clark took five wickets for seven runs. The above cablegram recalls a few of the most remarkable feats with the ball by Australasian cricketers. (1) A. E Trott playing for Middlesex at Lord’s in 1907 against Somerset in his benefit match, took four wickets with consecutive balls, and also did the hat-trick in the. same Innings. Albert’s double feat is without parallel in first-class cricket. (2) Frank Tarrant in 1907, took four wickets with consecutive balls Cor Middlesex against Gloncestershire, at Bristol. (3) S. G. Smith, the Aucklander, playing for Northamptonshire, against of Edgbaston in 1924 also took four wickets with consecutive balls. Better Still. XL F_ Boyle, for tb e 1878 Australian eleven against eighteen of Elland Leeds, took 7 wickets in 8 balls.. Other Startling Tallies. Thre are four cases on record of Australasian cricketers taking the whole 1 !0 wickets in a single innings. (1) G. Giffen for the Australian eleven v. The Rest at Sydney, 18931894. (2) A. E. Moss for Canterbury against Wellington at Christchurch, .1889-1890.
(3) W. P. Howell, for the Australians v. Surrey at the Oval, 1899, his first game in England. (4) A. A. Mailey, for the Australians v. Gloucestershire, at Cheltenham, 1921. Ten Wickets In Both Innings JIn a small match in Australia in 1881, F. R. Spofforth bowled down all ten wickets of his opponents in eacli innings. The feat was repeated by J. Bryant playing for Erskine v. Deaf Mutes, Melbourne, 15th and 22nd October, 1887. Feat Analogous To Clark’s, (only better.) 9 wickets for 2 runs, G. Elliott, Victoria v. Tasmania, at Launceston, ( 1857-1858. 7 wickets for 3 runs, F. R. Spofforth, Australians v. an English eleven, at Birmingham, 1884. 0 wickets for 1 run, S. Cosstick, Victoria v Tasmania, at Melbourne, 18CS-18G9.' 6 wickets for 2 runs, W. Hoare, Queensland v. New South Wales, at Brisbane, 189.2-1893.
