FOOTBALL.

LEVIN WANDERERS PREVAIL. IN RUGBY PIPE-OPENER. GOOD GAME AT SHOWGROUND. For a first flutter Saturday’s match at Palmerston North, between Levin Wanderers (black) and Western United (red and black) left no room for criticisim, in view of the earliness of the season and lack of serious Rugby condition. Sly put Western United ahead at the interval by a nice penalty goal. It was the middle of the second spell before Harry Jacob, the Now Zealand International, let his backs away for Tatana (forward) to complete the movement and equalise with an unconverted try. The crack Horowhonua club fifteen had the better of the desultory play that followed, until Grotty put the result beyond doubt with a try from a good follow-up. The decision —queried in some quarters—was quite in order, as Sid Qrinstead’s attempt to keep clear was charged down by Grotty and an undoubted rebound (not a “knockon”) resulted. The Levin forward was on the ball like a flash, and the winning score was the outcome. Jacob failed with both shots at goals from the Wanderers’ tries.
