News was received from Mr W, G. Stead that Sasanof liropped dead on Sunday. Mr Stead adds: "Sasanof was being ridden -by my eldest son who was getting him ready for the Hastings Show. Hector Gray used to nay that he had great courage, so I suppose his heart was strained when racing. His performances in. beating Desert Gold and Gloaming, besides winning every gold cup race in New Zealand, will hardly ever be equalled. In addition, Sasanof had the honour of being the only horse who has won both the Melbourne and New Zealand Cups"

A lady at the recent Hawkc"* Bay races made a deep study or Hie horses running in the fifth rape, with the object of securing some of the financial potentialities that were floating elusively in the air, relates the " Tribune. * Having done so she paused and looked around the lawn for an inspiration. Sure enough, it brushed past her leg, in the person of an acquain v apce, whose christian nam c was Joyce. "This win is for me," said the lady, and going nap on her feminine instincts, she plumped on " Jvidy Joyce," who sailed past the post a winner. Betting is sure an occult science.

ASHHUICST-FOHAXfiIXA RACING CLUB.

Included among "the improvements carried out this year is the erection of new railing round the racing track, a distance of four furlongs having nowbeen completed. In order to relieve the congestion of traffic due to the junctioning Of three roads at the main entrance, the gates arc being removed back some distance. and an extra gate erected to cope more easily with motor traffic. The racing track has received special attention from the ground committee, and is in splendid condition. The programme issued for this year's fixture, to. be held on Wednesday, 21st November, is a liberal and attractive one, and is sure, to make i a strong appeal. The stakes allotted for the eight events total £1330. The chief event on the card is the Ashhurst Cup, of 300 sovs, one mile and a quarter. The other open event's are the Pohangina Handicap of 200 savs, six furlongs, and the Raumai Welter, of 170 sovs, 7 furlongs. The hack races complete a well-balanced programme, and should draw good entries. The Hack Hurdles, one and a-half miles, Kbmako Handicap, , seven furlongs and Manawatu Gorge Welter, one mile, are each worth 140 sovs. The remain.

Lady Isinglass, Paddnna, and Killocra aTO a favoured trio for the Wellesley Stakes. There's no doubt that Surveyor will come in. for a lot of support in, the Wellington Handicap. The distance

ing event is the Maiden, Stakes, of 100 bovs, to be run over five furlongs. Nominations for all events close on October 31st.
