STOCKING RIVERS.
ATLANTIC SALMON FRY. [Per Press Association.] TAUMARUNUI, Oct. 16. Mr. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries.ws at present visiting the Kakahi hatchery near Taumarunui for the pur pose of liberating 500,000 Atlantic salmon fry, which have been successfully hatched by Mr. Bebington, who is in charge at Kakahi. These will b e liberated in the VTTiakapapa, Kakahi, Wairaarino, Pungapunga ana other streams which flow into the Wanganui. Already Mr. Beblngton has liberated 200,000. The liberation of the remainder may be held up for a few days on account of th© state of the rivers, which are swollen by the recent rains. The Wanganul River is the first in the North Island to be stocked with Atlantic salmon and Mr. Ayson expresses the opinion that it is the most suitable in the Dominion and considers it an anglers' paradise. He predicts that once the river is stocked there will b e no end of tourists to th*, district from all parts of the Dominion and Australia. Mr. Ayson believes in intensive stocking and intends to concentrate on the Wanganui River for the next eight years. He hopes to liberate over 500,000 fry annually.
