MANCHESTER BLOCK.

"We pay the first horse past the post," was a notice which appeared over the first totalisatar which was installed on the racecourse Feilding knew, and on one occasion some trouble arose over the too literal interpretation of this notice. A race meeting was in progress, and among the competitors in one of the races were two. horses named respectively Rilly-jro-Byc and Awahou, the latter being owned by a Maori. It was a hurdle event, and Billy-go-Bye did riot bother tho hurdles, and ran past the post first, followed by Awahau, who had negotiated all the hurdles. The owner of Billy-go-Bye demanded first prize and so did the owner of Awahau. A heated argumL<n t . followed, and culminated in the "tote" having to pay out on two firsts. Such incidents as these, and there must be many of them, are required in order to help in the production of a souvenir of the Manchester Bluck Jubilee. This event falls next year, and tho programme is being arranged for February 17, IS, ]D, and 20. There is much detail work to be done, and those who have old records and photos which are likely to be of use, aro requested to get in touch with the secretary, P. 0., box 69, Feilding. There is to be a general meeting on Tuesday next, at a place to be announced later.
