Gazeworthy, winner of the Trial Stakes, is by Roseworthy from Gaze, 1 and is a half-brother to Stare, who is at present favourite for the Caulfield Cup. Zouave was punted on for big money in the Lawn Handicap, and duly landed, paying a Gloaming price. Bitters paid a good price in the Cup; the track suited him. Deroulede was backed to win the Lansdowne Handicap, but was beaten into third place—may do better today. The Dunedin meeting concludes today. The following horses may run well in their engagements:—Londonderry, April Showers, In the Pink, Bonnie Winkie, Francaise, Mirza, Gold Spinner and Prosperity. Oratress has foaled a Ally foal to Absurd. This youngster should surely be able to gallop for Oratress, herself is a New Zealand Cup winner, by Demosthenes from Equitas, a brilliant galloper by Advance. Celmisia, the half-sister by Hymettus to Marqueteur and Mark Time, has broken down badly and is under the care of the veterinary surgeon. Doubts are expressed whether the mare will ever race again.

W. Johnstone was laid £IOOO by Fleuriste’s owner about winning the Epsom Handicap, and Soorak’s owner would have made a similar present to J. E. Pike in the event of ins colt winning the Derby. Commencing the last furlong of their respective races, it is probable both Pike and Johnstone thought they had that £IOOO safe. After passing the winning post in the Derby, Brown (Rivoli’s rider) said to Pike, “I beat you,” and was so confident of it that he declined the. latter’s suggestion to shave.

Jerry Watt, a well-known Tasmanian rider in steeplechases and hurdle races, was found dead in his bed at Mr Bernard McKenna’s training stables, Ulverstone, North-west Coast, on the morning of September 27th. He won a hurdle race on Normandy Lass at Mowbray on the previous Saturday, and rode Hardrelly in the steeplechase in which the latter broke a blood-vessel and did not secure a placing, which was a great disappointment to Watt, who was confident of winning. At the inquest a verdict of suicide was returned.

Stetson’s newest are shown in a very fine hat window, Collinson and Cunninghame’s men’s section to-day. For value and satisfaction Stetson’s at our nett cash prices will be found superlative. Store open Saturdays from 9 to 5.30.*
