GREAT SERB VICTORY.

Bulgar Line Smashed. On 18-Mile Front Enemy in Disorderly Retreat (Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Thursday, 9.15 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 5. A correspondent at the Serbian Army Headquarters says that the Serbians followed up their recent sweeping success on Malkaindje by a brilliant victory which will probably decide the fate of Monastir. The Bulgars were forced to fall back from strong positions, retreating disorderly in consequence of the Serbs' capture of the whole of Kajmakalan, which is the key to the Plain of Monastir. The enemy will possibly make an attempt to stand at the line of the Cerna River. The Bulgar is a brave soldier, but lie has been shaken by the relentless artillery fire. "The Times' " correspondent with the Serbian Army says:—

"The Serb victory far surpasses the most sanguine expectations. It caused an eighteen-mile breach in the Bulgarian lines, through which the Serbs are pouring as fast as the natural difficulties will permit."

Customary Cannonade.

Sir Douglas Kuig reports: — Hostile artillery is aetive especially in the neighbourhood of Zollern Redoubt, and between Guadecourt and Eaucourt Labbage. An attempted en-„ emy bombing ati ack in the latter region was repulsed, his wounded being abandoned. There is considerable shelling south of the Ypres-Menin road. Elsewhere it is quiet. The rain continued most of the day.

The application of the Military Service Act to Ireland is engaging increasing attentionSir Edward Carson in an interview said that he preferred conscription to Ireland's dishonour. It is reported that Mr Redmond makes a statement on the subject of recruiting on Thursday.

A party of Germans recently interned in England protested to the German Consul at Flushing that Zeppelins bombed two German camps jln England, placing their countrymen in great danger. They showed fragments of bombs.
