Yesterday there was a great gathering at the bowling green for the opening of the season. There were a number of visitors from Otaki, Levin and Poxton. After the formal opening by the President, Mr Eoach, a match was arranged. The President and Vice-President choosing three teams each. The following are the results: — PRESIDENT'S TEAM. No. I.— Eoach (s), Gardiner, Bilderbeck, Fargher 22." No. 2: Whitley (s), Walker, Smith, Atmore 22; No. 3: Stephenson (s), Butt, Hennessey, Mitchell 23; total 67. VICE-PRESIDENT' S TEAM.
No, 1: Gibson (s), Knowles, SnanKLand, Hensman 23; No. 2: Gunning, Goodall, Noble (fl), Hook; No. 3: Hislop '(s), Rimmer, String, Bill 25; total 66. This left the President's teams victors by one point. Luncheon was supplied by Mrs Roach, the wife of the President, assisted by a number of other ladies. The Tennis Club also opened its season, a number of seratch games were indulged in. Mr and Mrs Hemmingson have just received a letter from their son Sergt. Jeff Hemmingson, saying he is still going strong. He narrates a narrow shave when two of his comrades were killed alongside him by a bursting shell. He sent home a piece of the shell. Jeff is an old Palmerston North High School boy, where he matriculated. He was determined to do his bit at the front at 18 years. He enlisted, was hauled out, but ultimately got back again. There is som.? disappointment here that Shannon was not advised of the reception in th<3 Square to Father Dore, to allow this town to be represented. The Shannonites claim'a big share of the padre.
