Modern Warfare.
i The following is a New Zealand soldier >s opinion of the different dcathdealing devices: — Ballets: Although deadly, are not worth considering. Machine guns: Very deadly* at the beat of times.Shrapnel: Very good if there is plenty of shelter; if not, no good. High explosive: A fair devil at all times. Pom-poms (a small shell): Fast and furious, but of little account. Whizz-bangs (something like the French 75's): Very deadlly in the open. Rifle grenades: Very rowdy and destructive —kill many. Hand grenades: Make a great row, but only used at close quarters. Minenwerfer: One of the most fearful of all trench mortars. Least liked of all, although one can nearly always see them coming—frightful. Aerial torpedoes: Ungodly affairs. Gas: Puts fear into most of us, and very deadly. Snipers: Most deadly at all ranges. Bayonets: About the best chance of the lot. Land mines: No hope. Bombardment: Hell on earth. Germans: The devils. / "War: Bloody murder. I forgot to include tear shells. So far have not experienced them.
