MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES
NEW ZEALANDERS IN THE LIST (Post Correspondent.) LONDON, Feb. 19. The long list of officers and men who were considered worthy of mention in the despatches i"»f the British Field-Marshal was published yesterday. It includes quite a number of New Zealanders 3 at least one. of whoiz\ unfortunately, did not live long enough to hear of the honour he had earned.
Admiral E. G. Shortland, a member of the distinguished West Country family which provided New Zealand wtih her first Colonial Secretary, had retired before the war, but in common with many others he rejoined the active list and was posted to the President for special service, which appears to have been in connection with the naval operations on the Belgian coast, for he is mentioned amongst Admiral Hood 's officers.
Others in the list are: — Major (temporary Lieut.-Colonel) J. T. Burnett-Stuart, who was Director of Military Operations in New Zealand from 1910 to 1912; and
Major the Hon. R. H. Collins, D.5.0.. who was A.G. in New Zealand a year or two ago. Both were members of the headquarters staff Lieutenant E. W. Chapman, 3rd Dragoon Guards, formerly of North Canterbury- (since killed in action).
Major C. L. K. Campbell, 16th Lancers (formerly staff officer to General Babington); second time mentioned. Major A. W. Macarthur-Onslow, 16th Lancers (since killed in action).
Major H. D. 0. Ward, R.A., formerly A.D.C. to Lord Ranfurly, served with New Zealand Contingent in Boer War; now with 49th Battery. Lieutenant (temporary Captain) H. J. I. Walker, Warwickshire Regiment. The Rev. C. T. Maclean, second lieutenant 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers; afterwards wounded. Captain the Hon. J. Boyle, Ist Battalion Royal Scots; son of Lord Glasgow (afterwards killed). Major A. G. Wauchope, D.5.0., 2nd Battalion Black Watch, formerly on staff of Lord Glasgow. Captain Oliver Steele, Ist Battalion Berkshire Regiment (since killed in action). Major (temporary Lieut.-Colonel) H. O'. Knox, A.S.C., recently Q.M.G. in New Zealand Lieut. A. A. Martin, R.A.M.C. (of Palmerston North), M.D., F.R.C.S. Major S. R. Davidson, 4(th Sikhs, who received his commission in the Somerset Light Infantry in 1890, from New Zealand, and has seen much service in Soinaliland. The promotions and orders of chivalry. approved by the King for services in the field,'were published today. The list includes the following:— Colonel R. H. Davies, C.8., of the New Zealand Staff Corps, who went out as Commander of tae 6th Infantry Brigade, and was mentioned in despatches for his services, returned to England and took command as temporary Major-General of the 20th Division of the new armies. He is now confirmed in the rank of Major-Gen-eral.
Lieutenant-General Sir C. Fergusson son of a former Governor of New Zealand. is awarded the K.C.B. Captain Charles Nelson, of the 15th Hussars, who was employed with the New Zealand Forces from 1007 to 1909. gets the D.S.O. 2nd Lieutenant (the Rev.) C. T. Maclean. Royal Fusiliers, is awarded the Military Cross. Major C. L. K. Campbell, 10th Lancers, gets liis Brevet Lieutenant-Col-on elcv. Captain 11. S. Williams, Dorset Regiment. receives his brevet majority. Major S. R. Davidson, 4/tn Sikhs, becomes Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel. 2nd Lieutenant (temporary Lieutenant ) H. D. B. Willcox (Sherwood Foresters i. a Canterbury boy, gets the Military Cross.
