Ihe withdrawal of the steamer Zealandia from the Vancouver service and placing her in the interState running led to the reductio* of the firemen by three. The other firemen objected, and struck. The Zealandia is consequently held up. COAL MEN CONFER. Received 9.5 p.m. Sydney, April 3S. A deputation representing th® southern and northern coal miners, the Sydney and Newcastle Coal, Lumperß' Unions, and the Seamen'f Union interviewed the Hon. Jame» McGowen (Premier) and the Hon. A. 0. Oarmichael respecting the colliery troubles. It is understood that important proposals were submitted. Mr McGowen announced that it had been agreed not to divulge tho proceedings. STRIKERS' PROBLEM. The first distribution of strike pay has been given to the souther* miners of 8s each and 2s for each child, which is ac the rate of Is Gd per week during the currency of th« strike. The smallness of the amount is attributed to the fact that many unions have not yet responded to th* appeal for funds.
