WOMAN OF 100 YEARS AGO.

AN EXHIBITION. London, March 12. "Women, 1813—1913" is the striking title of an international exhibition that is to open at Amsterdam in a couple of months' time. It promises to offer the best object-lesson yet given of the advance that woman has made during the century towards an equal partnership with man in the work and play of the world. In a beautiful old Dutch house, surrounded by an old-style Dutch garden, all the exhibits will relate to things as they were in the life of womanhood 100 years ago. The domestic arrangements of the house, including the great kifcc len, will help to suggest a housewife's duties at the beginning of the century; the pictures, books, and needlework, her gentle relaxations ; and'tne documents of her v erv limited sphere of public action. I§o YEARS AFTER. Then there is to be an 1813 industrial division, showing the shameful conditions under which many women were obliged to toil. Close to this old Dutch house a roomy modern building is being erected for the contrasting 1913 section. Here the home of to-day, with its labour-saving appliances, will be represented, aud stress laid on the vast field that woman has conquered for herself outsi e the home. Women architects, women doctors, women lawyer-% women in the Council chamber, women in the office, even women in the pulpit, will also find a place. One large room will be devoted to the cause of women suffrage, a prominent contributor to this department being the English National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies who are sending records and other literature. COSTUMES OF THE PAST. Dress has not been forgotten, for a number of women are to appear in the national costumes of the past century. In the grounds of the exhibition space has been reserved for women's sports and games, and whatever form of feminist activity cannot otherwise be represented will be dealt with by means of the cinematograph. ,
