FROM THE CABLES.

Press Aeen—By Telegraph—Copyright The Victorian State Government has decided not to contribute to the Bcott Fund, the reasons given being that some of the other States are not taking part, that the people are contributing directly, and that the matter is one the Federal Government should deal with.

The French barque Jean Hart, from Antwerp to Warraroo, with a cargo of pig iron and coke, is ashore at Wardang Island, opposite Por Victoria, South Australia. The crew have landed. It is feared she is a total wreck.

The aviator Hart is arranging a flight from Sydney to Melbourne. He will build a bi-plane for the purpose.

Excepting the north-eastern corner of New South Wales, useful rain has fallen throughout the State, relieving the situation, which, in many districts, particularly the south coast dairying, had become serious. With the rain came a chauge from sultry to wintry conditions.
