London, March 8. The Hon. S. Buxton, President of the Board of Trade, lias intervened in the bakers' dispute. BRITISHERS AND PLEASURE. London, March 8. The Manchester Guardian declares that while sparsely-peopled Australia has established a national military service and Canada has assumed the defence of her coasts aud frontiers, thickly-peopled England has neither the men nor the stomach for a like task at Home. They prefer to shout at football matches, eat. sweets, and sit at a picture palace. LONDON WOOL SALES. Received 5.5 p.m. London, March 8. There were large wool offerings, principally of New Zealand and and Australian. Good competition prevailed in all classes and prices were firm at opening rates. S AFRICA AND NAVY. Capetown, March 9. Mr Smuts sails about June to consult the Imperial authorities on the naval defence question.
