THE MEAT WORKERS.
LONGBURN NOT DISTURBED,
The Longburn Meat Works are not in the vortex of any industrial unrest at present, though, J from the general outlook all over the Dominion, it may be involved in the threatened st.rik® if it comes into effect after the award lias expired. So far the authoriies at Lonbgurn have re- ! ceived no intimation of any dissatisj faction, but the men are under the j same award as other centres, which ; will expire shortly, j One point which had not been much ■ emphasised in connection with the ! strike movement is the effect which I the Australian influence bears upon ! the question. In Longburn, Napier ' and most of the small inland centres the slaughtermen are local residents. But in Wellington, and probably i Auckland and Christchurch also, | there is among the workers a large Autralian element, which comes | over aech season for the work. It is 'to the restless Australian element. ! that the strike fever is attriluted. J Whether the local resident workers i desire a strike or not the situation 1 appears to be dominated by the Australian vote. This position i must remain so until the bif? meat | works can so amend their method of j working as to be able to maintain jin regular employment sufficient j staffs of local men. j "Where the Australian is," said one man "there you will always find a fight."
