At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., Peter Sohlager and his son Alfred Sohlager were oliarged, under the Stamp Aot of 1908, with having givon an unstamped receipt to Henry Ooombes, of Taonui street. SubInspeotor O'Donovan oondnoted the proseoution, and Mr Withers defended. Ooombes gave evidenoe that he. had paid defendant, Peter Sohlager, £lB off his aooount, whioh defendant had acknowledged in writing on the aocount form. He denied getting a previous stamped reoeipt. Defendant Baid he gave a stamped receipt, but being told by Ooombes that there was an error in the figures, he had given the amended statement on whioh the charge was based. Alfred Sohlager was charged with giving an unstamped reoeipt for £5 to Ooombes in return for a suit of clothes, Peter Sohlager was fined £2 and costs 18s 6d., and the junior 10h and oosts lis. To-day and' to-morrow are absolutely the last two days of the gift prices now ruling for balance of summer goods at The lion Marche. New Autumn and Winter goods to be shown on Thursday. A epeoial meeting of the High School Board was held last night Mr W. Rutherfurd presiding. Miss Margaret Roualdson of Timaru was appointed juiior misrtess at the High School in place of Miss Opie who has resigned. There were 18 applications for the position. The offioial opening of the water works at Tiritea will take place today. Two conveyances will leave the the Oounoil Chambers at 10 a.m., and abont thirty are expected to go out. The offioial coremonr of turning on the water will be performed by the Mayoress, and the Mayor will deliver an address. The Councilors will also speak, after which the party 'will pionio in the bush. The branch railway between Stratford on the Taranaki line, and the Main Trunk railway at Ongarue, is being slowlv pushed ahead. There are now between 300 and 400 men on the works. The line is open for traffic for sixteen miles inland from Stratford, and a further seotion of six miles will be open before the end of the year. There is still a gap of 80 miles from the present terminus to the Main Trunk Line.

Mr R.N. I'wopeuy, well known as editor of the Australian Pastoralists' Review, after spending several weeks at Rotorua, says it is only the want of a widespread knowledge that prevents it from being visited by an even greater number of tourists. He was struck with the large area of laud around Rororoa, lying idle, that when it is turned io protfiable acoount will be a valuable asset to Rottrua and the Dominion.

The business • transacted at the Oampbell-Btreet School Committee meeting last night, was chiefly of a routine nature. The chairman, Mr H. Palmer, presided, and Messrs Holben, A. E. Clausen, Gittings, White and the Rev. Beggs were present. The hoadmaster's report, whioh waß adopted, was considered very satisfactory. Tho highteat attendance for the month was 587 which was considered particularly good. Accounts amounting to £5 were passed for payment.

The ohampionship meeting.of the Dominion Rifle Association will open at Trentham on Thursday. Over 500 entries have already been received, and there are several late entries still to qpme. The Palmerston North Rifles and Lniton Rifles will both be well represented. nnder the auspioes of the Manawatn Boxing. Association, whioh rakes plaoe on the 25th Maroh, promises to •provide some exoellent aport. Several Wellington men will take part, including the Porter Bros., Owner and Devitt, the latter of whom will meet Watohorn. Competitors will also come from Shannon, Paekakarikl and Rongotea. The novioe class promises to be an interesting feature of the' tournament, and several local men have signified their intention of oompeting.

A peculiar case was heard before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday, when Jaines-Brace Beale was oharged with illegally impounding stook, the pro* perty of W. B. V. Pearoe, of Oroua Bridge, Mr Baldwin acted for the complainant and Mr Moore defended. Mr Baldwin said the defendant removed a mob of ooruplalnant's sheep from ono seotion to another, and impounded them, giving complainant notice that unless they were removed within 24 days they would be imponnded at Palmersto.n. Mr Baldwin contended that suoh notice of impounding was insufficient. His Worship considered that auffloient notice had been given. Mr Baldwin said that lie intended to dispute Mr Beale's bona fides as an ooonpier of the land, bnt his Worship stated that he had no jurisdiction in the matter when the title was disputed, on his Honour the Chief Justice's ruling in a previous case heard before Mr Thomson. Mr Baldwin pointed out that a disputed title might arise in a case of assault heard under the Police Offences Aot, and that the point might also be raised under the Fenoing Aot. His Worship admitted that the position was a peonliar one, but on the ruling of the Chief Justioe he could not hear the case. Costs were allowed defendants.

Nominations for the Lioenßlng Committee olosed last night. Two rival "tiokets" have boen nominated, by the License party and by the "Moderates" respectively. The election will take place on Tuesday, I 9th inst. The chief issue between the parties is whether the olosing lionr for hotels shall be lOo'oloek or 11. At about 1 a.m. yesterday morning, a four-roomed residence, owned ; and oconpied by Mr Wm. Want, of ■Scott's Road, Linton, was destroyed •by fire. The occupants of the house, Mr and Mrs Want, and Miss Chadwick, a boarder, all just escaped with a few olothes wlien the house was ablaze. Mis Want was awakened by the smoke and roused her husband. The home was insured for £230 and the furniture for £BO, both "with the Phoenix Company. The ordinary fortnightly meeting ■of Court Mauawatu was held last evening. A large number of mem•hers were peseut and C.R. Bro. Rosanoski occupied the oliar. An invitation was accepted from the Court Loyal, Feilding, to attend a Church Parade on March 14th. All members desirous of attending are requested to hand their names to the secretary. The social oominifctee reported that invitations were issued for the ensuing season and arrangements were in baud for the next sooial. Two new members were initiated.
