Wishes to Die in Harness.

A Poetic Invocation. Received July 7, 10.82 p.m. Rome, Yesterday. The Pope showed a slight improvement to-day as the result of stimulants. He took a little food and sat in an armchair in order to assist breathing. He attended to business in defiance of the physicians' injunction, dec'aring that he wished to die in harness, and that he could die happily since he obeyed his conscience, and had striven for the Church's welfare. His Holiness dictated a poetic invocation to the Redeemer and virgin Mary, and farewell to all Christians. Towards evening accentuated symptoms of general depression appeared, his respirations became more frequent, and the superficial pulse weak and at times imperceptible. His intellect was unimpaired. Mazzoni, late in the evening, stated that unless the unexpected happened, the patient would live a day or two.
