MASQUERADE BALL

The masquerade ball held in the A.N.A. ballroom by the Merrymakers' concert party on Wednesday was attended by a large number of dance patrons. A feature was the varied costuming and many of the fancy dresses showed much forethought and originality, reflecting credit on the wearers, who had made the most of what materials they could acquire. Masks were distributed at the doors, everyone entering into the spirit of fun. and dancing progressed until the carlv hours. Many New Zealand and Al'.ied servicemen were present. The ballroom was decorated with carnival effect with tiny coloured lights outlinintr the sound shell and the soft drinks stall, and masses of spring blossom and bulbs were arranged on the stage. The same flowers were used to effect in the decoration of the supner balcony and tables, where . refreshments were served by members of the concert party. Mr A. Gordon acted a 3 M.C. As a result of the ba'.l the party • raised a pleasing sum with which to provide costumes end meet other expenses involved in their - good work of providing entertainment at Service camps and for patriotic committees in other centres.

The August social of the Palmerston North Business Girls' Club was held at the "home of a committee member, Miss P. Raisin, of Cuba Street. Competitions and games occupied the time, trophies being won by the president, Mrs M.'.H. Oram, Betty Sycamore, and Miss E. Greer. Miss Niehol entertained with recitations. As usual, the girls had brought a nice array of gifts for parcels for the Maori Battalion. Thanks were conveyed to the hostess by Miss V. Royal (secretarv) for a pleasant occasion and the use of her home. Mesdame?. Whitehead and Millington represented the vice-presidents and there was an apology for absence from the patron (Mrs A. E.' Mansford).
