Another crowded day of hospital tours and receptions was spent cheerfully and tirelessly yesterday, at Auckland, by Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt. In four hospitals she spoke collectively to thousands- of Americans and New Zealandcrs. She greeted and chatted with hundreds of individual servicemen and civilians. She inspected the meat canning department of a freezing works, visited the Devonport Naval Base, called at the Women's Services Club, attended a dinner as the guest of American army officers, and concluded her day by addressing a great gathering of Auckland women. Sympathy in their illness wat expressed with Mesdames E. W. Drake (secretary), Cowling, Wass, Longley, Beatson, and • Matthews by the president (Mrs J. Barsanti) at the meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the League of Mothers yesterday. Miss J. Paterson, of the Palmerston North Hospital staff, who has been elected the first Dominion president of the Student Nurses' Association, is the elder daughter of Mrs K. Paterson, of Fendalton, Christchurch. After spending several years at the Christchurch School of Art, Miss Paterson followed the profession of fashion ' drawing and commercial art, later doing copy-writing for advertising. During her school-days she was also interested: in dietetics and home science and, seeing opportunities for research and study,-event-ually entered the nursing profession, and is now in her third year. Much credit is due to Miss Paterson for her organisation of the recent conference of the Student Nurses' Association and to the secretary of the Palmerston North branch, Miss E. Graham. The Palmerston North Hospital has reason to be proud of its representatives, as the matron (Miss L. M. Banks) is the Dominion president of the Registered Nurses' Association. It is a coincidence that both presidents are old pupils oi the Christchurch Girls' High School. An L.G.TJ. silver and bronze modal and points competition will be played by the Manawatu Ladies' Golf Club on Saturday. Anyone unable to play is to ring Mrs J. P. Flood.
