ARMY SWIMMING

MAORIS DO WELL. (Official War Correspondent.) (Rec. 12.30 p.m.) CAIRO, Sept. 1. All but three of'the 11 events of the New Zealand Division's swimming championships were won by teams, or single competitors from the 28th Maori Battalion. About 1000 spectators, including General Freyberg. watched the finals of the championships decided at the Maadi Pool. The Maoris won the three relays, all free-style sprints, and the back-stroke event. In the 50 yards dash Jimmy Ratana, of Rolorua. runner-up for the Egyptian championships won from Aratama, also of the Maori Battalion. Wharcaitu, a former New Zealand champion, won the 100 yards free style and the 100 yards back-stroke. The first and second placings in the 220, 440 and 880 championships were shared by Haimona,, well known in New Zealand swimming as Riko Simon, and Pat Malthus, the exWelineton title-holder. Haimoana won the 220 and 440 with Malthus a close second in each event. In the 880 Malthus won clearly from Haimona. Taylor, of the Divisional Workshops, won the 100 yards breast-stroke, and the diving championship went to Donaldson, tho Canterbury champion. The six and 12 man relays "were won, by the Maori Battalion. A water polo team representing Rhodesia beat the Now Zealand Division by 4 goals to 2. ,
