FACING COAL FAMINE

(Rec. 1 p.ni.) ./ SYDNEY, Sept. 3. Victoria and South Australia now face a coal famine because stocks for essential use have been at a very low level for several weeks. It is stated in Melbourne that short shipments of New South • Wales coal to Victoria, may lead to an immediate and drastic cut in Melbourne gas supplies, a curtailment in Victorian tram services, and a reduction of output from essential war factories. The Victorian Premier (Mr Dunstan) has telegraphed to the Prime Minister stressing the desperate coal shortage in Victoria. Officials are now examining the practicability of* sending supplies of coal between States by rail.
