Bell, of Invercargill, and Lieut.-Colonel E. F. Selby, of Gore. When interviewed Colonel Bell stated that in view of the information he had received about the future control of the Home Guard he had been compelled to ask that he be relieved of liis position as group director. He had nothing further to say at present as he had yet to see the officers in his group. “I have already made arrangements to meet my battalion commanders as I consider that those who have stood by mo for the past two years are entitled to an explanation as to why I havo resigned,” he added. Colonel Selby said he had no statement to make.
Home Guardsmen of Huntly A\Company have passed a resolution taking strong exception to the order issued on September 21 exempting coal mine workers from Home Guard training. They consider that owing to the extreme gravity of the war situation training should be made compulsory for all eligible men not serving in the Armed Forces. More than 50 per cent, of those present at the meeting were miners. A similar resolution was passed by the Rotowaro Homo Guard unit which is comprised almost entirely of coalminers.
