STALIN’S STATEMENT

ALLIED AID TO RUSSIA ALL POSSIBLE DONE LONDON, Oct. 5. In Washington Lord Halifax (the British Ambassador) and Mr Sumner Welles (United States Under-Secretary of State) commented on M. Stalin’s written reply to a journalist’s questions. Mr Welles said that the United States intended to give and was giving all possible assistance to Russia. Lord Halifax said that he thought that M. Stalin, Mr Churchill, and President Roosevelt understood each other very well. The statement, in his opinion, was a very encouraging one, expressing Russia’s determination to hold on and defeat the Germans. He praised the defenders of Stalingrad. Hitler and Japan had been able to show remarkable gains on the map, said Lord Halifax, but the days of easy victories for them were now over.

M. Stalin in his reply stated“ln the Soviet estimate of the present _ situation a second front occupies a very important place—one might say a place, of firsU rate importance. Compared with the aid which Russia is giving its allies by drawing unonitself Germany s main forces, the Allied aid to Russia hitherto has been little effective. In order to amplify and improve this aid, the one thing required is that the Allies fulfil their obligations fully and on time. The capacity of the Soviet to resist the Gorman brigands is not less, if not greater, than the capacity of Germany or any other aggressor" to secure for itself world domination.”
