CONTINUOUS ATTACK
BATTLE OF STALINGRAD RELIEF MOVES CONTINUE LONDON, Oct. 5. "Under continued lieavj' enemy attacks the Russians have suffered a setback in the north-west suburbs of Stalingrad, where the Germans havo succeeded in recapturing a part of the factory settlement which the Russians retook a few days ago.
The enemy launched a series of violent attacks with tanks and infantry and finally the Russians were forced to retire. In all the other Stalingrad sectors the Germans have been held, in spite of their heavy attacks.
North-west and south-west of the city Marshal Timoshenko’s armies are continuing to attack, with satisfactory results. In one sector Russian tanks succeeded in breaking through the elaborate German defences, and there is evidence that the effects of these attacks on the flanks are being felt by the enemy, the flow of supplies and reinforcements having been slowed. The latest reports from' Moscow show that the battle for Stalingrad continues fiercest in the factory settlement. The Germans continue to launch heavy attacks hut they are being held. In one attack the enemy employed three divisions of infantry and 100 tanks supported by planes. Tn the Mozdok region of the Caucasus, the Germans have made no progress since they reached the outskirts of an inhabited locality two days ago. Fierce fighting is proceeding for the village which has been mentioned several times lately. One Soviet unit has repelled four attacks by infantry and tanks.
The enemy’s thrusts towards the port of Tuapse have not brought him any further success.
In the Rzhev area the Russians have routed a German force, driven the enemy back seven miles, and captured an important place. Two more Axis commanders have been killed on the Russian front. One was the leader of a tank division and the other commanded a Hungarian division. Moscow' states that Soviet forces sank a 10,000-ton enemy transport in the Baltic.
