MAGISTRATE’S COURT
Mr 11. P. La wry, S.M., presided at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. Four charges of car conversion were preferred against J. 11. Alloway, aged 20, soldier, from Auckland. It was stated that he broke camp to secure his mother's consent to his going overseas. The Magistrate said that two of the charges were not related lo these circumstances. On each of two charges he was sentenced to three months’ gaol, the terms to be cumulative, and on two other charges he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within 12 months. On a charge of stealing 40ft of hose, valued at £2 10s and owned by L. Christophcrson, at Waipukurau, Robert Gcorgo Crockett, fireman, was admitted to probation for 18 months. It was stated that he returned the hose to a point closo to the place from which he took it when ho was spoken to by a shunter. Finos of £5, with 10s costs, were imposed on K. H. Luxmore. of Ngata Street (Mr Petersen) on two charges of wilfully giving a false alarm of fire to the Fire Brigade. For failing to give way to traffic on the right at an intersection, A. Olsen was fined £2, with 10s cosls. and £l, with 10s eosts, for not having a warrant of fitness for the vehicle lie drove. C. Shann was fined 109, with 11s costs, for parking a car within 6ft of a fire-plug. An adjournment for a month was made in a case in which an Army driver, whose name was suppressed. was charged with converting an Army car to his own use. A plea of guilty was entered for defendant by Mr Rowe and ,the Magistrate said the matter was one for the attention of the Army as defendant “borrowed” the ear and was returning it when it was involved in an accident. On a charge of inconsiderate driving, 11. J. Webb was fined £2, with 22s costs. A fine of £l. with 10s costs, was imposed on L. T. Kendall for procuring a rifle without a permit. M. McDowell was fined 30s. with 10s costs, for offensive behaviour in a public place. A request for a penalty to stop such conduct was made by Sergeant Mcßae, when Hugh Joseph Brosnan charged with assaulting G. Waters admitted that he had bron twice convicted of similar offences. The Magistrate said lie had warned accused previously, and ho imposed a sentence of one month’s hard labour. E. N. Cooper (Mr Rowe) and F. C. Lee, soldier (Major Vickcrman) were fined £2 each on a joint charge of the theft of a plate and cakes, valued at Is 6d. P. 11. Denison and II T. Walmsley, soldiers, were lointlv charged with the theft of petrol valued at 14s 9!d, the property of the Army Department. _ For accused, Mr Onglcy said each admitted an equal part in the incident. Walmsley was fined £2 and Donison sentenced to seven days imprisonment. A fine of £5 with 13s costa was imposed on J. Creighton (Mr On<r!ey), on a charge of having crossed the° railway lino in the Square when a train was approaching within ha,f a mile.
