DISASTROUS TYPHOON.
DESTRUCTION IN JAPAN
(Roe. 10.45 a.m.) TOKIO, July 22. Many lives were lost and thousands of homes flooded when a typhoon hitShizuoka, bringing to a climax ten days of almost continuous rain. Shizuoka bore the brunt of the storm, 35 lives being lost and many injured ; 26.000 homes were inundated. In the Tokio area there were 35 deaths and 12 000 homes were flooded.
Casualties among fishing boats are expected to be very high. Crops have been inundated and rail services dis organised.
The Weather Bureau predicts that by to-morrow night the rainfall will be the heaviest in Tokio’s history.
Shizuoka stands on Sitruga Bay, 95 miles south-west of Tokio. It has a population of about 140.000.
