APPEAL DISMISSED.

FARMING AND SERVICE. (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July IS ‘■\No must consider public opinion, for it would never do for the public to gain the impression that a man might escape military service by purchasing a farm,” said Air A. Coleman, S.M., chairman of No. 8 Armed Forces Appeal Board, at llawcra. The appeal of lan Duman Fraser, farmer, 1 of Palmerston North, who waited on the board at Hawera to ascertain whether it would bo advisable lor him to undertake the milking of 55 cows on 80 acres this season, was dismissed. If he were permitted to remain on the farm he would marry, instal machines, and milk the herd with the assistance of his wife, said Fraser. On the other hand, he would have to sell the herd and have the land grazed. He was milking eight cows by hand at 1 present. The Crown representative (Mr C. H. Clinkard): Do you know that it has been suggested that you purchased this farm and proposed to marry to avoid service?—l know that, but I had l>een negotiating for a farm before the outbreak of war. Mr Coleman : Conscription was gazetted on June 22, and you purchased the farm after that. We have reached the stage when married men arc liable to be called up, and we cannot permit single men to remain if they can be spared reasonably. It seems to mo that there is something in what Air Clinkard has said. The appeal was dismissed.
