OBITUARY.
MR GEORGE HERBERT ELLIOTT
With the passing of Mr G. H. Elliott, A.M., New Zealand loses one of the most interesting figures in. the history of art in tins country. Cuming to .New Zealand in his late teens, under engagement to the Canterbury School 01 Ait, Mr Elliott had a very considerable influence on the development of art in its earlier da>s in tiie Dominion. He came with excellent credentials, having obtained his Art -Master's diploma in England. During the period of his studies he gained the distinction of winning the bronze medal in tlu> national competitions for still life in water colour, this being one ol the most coveted awards given in what was then the world s largest students' competition. While occupy-! ing the position of art master at the Canterbury School of Art, many students who afterwards achieved distinc-j tion in the world of art received benefit from his very thorough tuition in' the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Among these were Miss Frances Ilodgkins, New Zealand's most noted woman painter, Mr Sidney Thompson, probably the best-known Naw Zealand artist either in or out: of the Dominion, and the late Mr! Kobert Proctor, a leading painter in! oils and water colour. | Mr Elliott was appointed art master at the Palmerston North Technical School in 1906 and many local art students benefited from his wide experience Himself an accomplished painter, the late Mr Elliott is repres-| ented in many New Zealand art gal-| lories, his work faithfully portraying the scenic beauties of the Dominion j Mr Elliott was a prominent member of the Baptist Church and in his more active years was a lay preacher and an enthusiastic Sunday school teacher: He was held in high repute by a large. circle of friends and acquaintances for his integrity. Christian principles, and friendly disposition. He was predeceased by his wiie, and one son who made the supreme sacrifice in the Groat War. Three sons, Messrs G. F., R. A., and L. W. Elliott, and a daugh-l ter. Miss Grace M. Elliott, have received the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. I
