Miss Jean Campbell, national girls’ work secretary of the Y.W.C.A., who has been the guest of Mrs C. A. Small, of Rongopai Street (president of the Palmerston North Y.AV.C.A.) returns to Wellington to-morrow.® ' , The resignation of Mrs F. Gowing, of Heretaunga Street, who is going to live in Auckland, was received with regret at the meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, yesterday: The president (Mrs W.. F. Field) said Mrs Gowing had been a most valuable member, particularly as a representative on the welfare committee of the Crippled Children Society. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to Mr and Mrs A. Smith, of Cuba Street, in the 1 passing, on Monday last, of Mrs A. | Coe, of Woburn, a sister of Mrs | Smith. Mrs Coe had not enjoyed good ■ health latterly, but the news of her passing came as a shock to her rela- j tive6. A daughter of the late Mr and I Mrs P. Thompson, of Eketahuna, she had resided in the Wellington district for some years and had visited Palmerston North on a number of occasions. She is survived by her husband and an adult family. The funeral service took place on Wednesday at the Karori Crematorium. W.D.F.U. Mrs W. F. Field presided over a meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the W.D.F.U. at Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s yesterday afternoon. New members welcomed were Mesdames Aldridge and Whitehead, on transfer irom Invercargill and Takapau respectively, and Miss Gimblett (Mangawhata) was a visitor. Mesdames Field and AV. Montgomery, delegates to a meeting of the Women’s ■■War Service Auxiliary general committee to arrange for helpers for the A. Club at week-ends, were instructed to offer co-operation, Members were notified of the quarterly provincial meeting in Feilding and invited to attend; Mrs E. B. Jennings (treasurer) was appointed a voting delegate in place of Mrs Robertson, who was unable to attend. Parcels for patriotic causes were acknowledged from Mesdames Eaton and Gardiner. Mrs Montgomery reported on the work of the sewing circle and the soldiers’ parcels committee. Mrs Field reported on the work of, division housekeepers, and appealed for women to take emergency positions. She said it was a patriotic and noble work, though without the glamour of other war work. Mrs Field presented a report on the garden party at the rest home, the net profit being £lsl 8s 9d. Appreciation of the work of local members had been expressed from all. quarters Mrs L. Dimmer was accorded thanks for assisting in the entertainment of visitors. Appreciation was also expressed of the assistance given by Messrs AV. F. Field, T. Taylor, Crawford, and McMahon. The financial statement, presented by Mrs Jennings, was considered satisfactory, Mrs Field remarking that it was better to spend the money available in helping country women rather than to have a large bank balance. At a committee meeting prior to. the general meeting Mrs Field presided and others present were Mesdames S. Avery, Abraham, A. Adcock, B. A. Bond, D. Buchanan, C. Crawford, C. Eglinton, H. Hairis, R. Hodgson, E. B. Jennings, H. Millard. AV. Montgomery, AV. Murray, J. McMahon, H. Middleton, M. Muir, A. Nichols, R. D. Robertson, J. Russell, AV. Tomlinson, T. Taylor, Misses A. Rawstron and M. E. Matheson (secretary). Routine business was dealt with.

GLEN OROUA INSTITUTE. At the annual meeting of the Glen Oroua Institute two new members wore welcomed, Mrs Fcrrier and Aliss Boswell. An invitation was received from the Oroua Downs Institute to its birthday celebration. Delegates to the annual federation mooting arc Mesdames Skeet and Walsh. Members handdc in more knitted articles for soldiers. Mrs Boswell gave a good report of the year’s work and Mrs Foster presented the. balance-sheet, which showed a good balance. Thanks were passed for Air Fuller for auditing'the books. Before the retiring president (Mrs Skeet) vacated tiie chair, she thanked the committee who had worked with her and all who had helped during the year. Mrs AV. Foster was elected president for the new year and the new committee is:—Mesdames A. Saundcr, H. Carter, Skeet, Evans, Davey, W. Boswell, T. R. Saunders, Larsen, Aviieelcr, Wallace, Lawlor and McEwcn. Points prizes for the year were won as follow . —Sewing, Airs J. Saunders; bloom, Mrs AV. Boswell; cooking, Airs J. Saunders. Airs McKay and Airs Barker were thanked for acting as scrutineers, also Mrs Fuller and Mrs Fcrrier for judging'competitions, which resulted: —Butter-scotch, Mrs Larsen 1, Mrs Lawlor 2, Airs Vallander 3; something now from something old, for refugees, Airs Vallcndcr 1, Mrs. Scliaw 2, Airs A. Saunders 3; bloom, Airs Smith 1, Airs J. Saunder 2, Airs Lawlor 3. Next month’s competitions are Shortbread and man’s darned working sock (heel); and best bloom. Next month a gift afternoon is to be given Aliss M. Vallcndcr, who is to be married shortly. A RECIPE. Sift Boz plain flour, J teaspoon salt, 1 heaped teaspoon baking powder. Mix 2 tablespoons cream or top milk with 1 cup milk, form into a soft dough and drop on to a well greased and lightly floured baking tray in rough pieces. Bake in a moderate oven for about 10 minutes.
